Mumbai, June 2: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized on Monday that education in one’s mother tongue, the preservation of Indian languages, and value-based journalism play a crucial role in the overall development of the nation.
He highlighted that the heritage of knowledge, culture, and values can be most effectively transmitted to future generations through mother tongues and Indian-origin languages. CM Fadnavis was speaking as the chief guest at an event organized by the Mumbai Hindi Patrakar Sangh to celebrate the historic 200th anniversary of Hindi journalism.
Discussing the benefits of education in the mother tongue, CM Fadnavis stated that knowledge is absorbed more effectively when acquired in one’s native language. He encouraged people to gain proficiency in other Indian languages to promote broader cultural unity.
“The history of Hindi journalism is rich and glorious. It played a significant role in raising public awareness during India’s freedom struggle,” he noted. He recalled how the journey began with the publication of the first Hindi newspaper, ‘Udant Martand,’ which successfully shaped the social and political discourse in the country.
He further mentioned that many leaders of the freedom movement actively used journalism as a powerful tool to awaken and sustain the spirit of nationalism across the nation.
Referring to the cultural and historical ties between Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, CM Fadnavis remarked that there have been strong connections between the two states through knowledge, tradition, and culture for centuries. Both Hindi and Marathi have evolved from the Sanskrit tradition and share a natural closeness due to the Devanagari script.
Commenting on the changing nature of journalism, the Chief Minister noted that the expansion of print, electronic, digital, and social media has completely transformed the dissemination of information. However, he stressed that the accuracy and credibility of news are far more important than the speed of its transmission.
CM Fadnavis stated that journalism plays a vital role as the fourth pillar of democracy, preserving the values of social life and strengthening democratic institutions. He urged that even in changing times, journalism must maintain its core values and continue to work for the public good.
Uttar Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also addressed the event, stating that Hindi is the third most spoken language in the world and serves as a unifying force for all.
