Mumbai, June 23: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a coalition partner in Meghalaya’s ruling alliance, has called for a thorough investigation into the recurring landslides affecting the under-construction Shillong-Dawki road project. The party expressed concerns over the safety and long-term stability of this vital infrastructure corridor.
Speaking to reporters in Shillong on Monday, Meghalaya BJP spokesperson Mariyahom Kharkrang stated that the severe landslide that occurred on Sunday was not an isolated incident. He noted that similar occurrences had taken place in various sections of the project previously.
Kharkrang emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation to identify the causes of these frequent landslides and to prevent such incidents in the future. He urged that an inquiry should be initiated to ascertain the reasons behind these events. Based on the findings, corrective measures should be implemented to mitigate future risks.
He pointed out that the ongoing landslides have not only disrupted road connectivity but have also raised questions about the stability of the landslide-prone areas and the overall execution of the project. The safety of travelers and workers associated with the project should be the top priority for the authorities.
According to the BJP leader, the investigation’s findings will help determine whether these incidents are due to geological factors, construction-related issues, inadequate landslide protection measures, or other technical deficiencies.
He urged the agencies involved in the project to take all necessary precautions and adopt scientific mitigation measures, especially during the monsoon season when such incidents are more frequent.
The Shillong-Dawki road project is considered one of Meghalaya’s most significant infrastructure initiatives, aimed at improving connectivity between the state capital Shillong and Dawki, a major trade and tourism hub near the India-Bangladesh border.
However, the repeated landslides along the route have raised concerns among residents and travelers, prompting calls for a thorough examination of the project’s safety and engineering standards.
