Manipur Reduces Summer Vacation in Schools Amid Security Concerns

Imphal, June 23: Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, announced on Monday that the summer vacation for schools in the state has been reduced from the usual three weeks to just one week. This decision comes in light of the current law and order situation in the region.

The Chief Minister stated that the aim of this decision is to minimize disruptions in students’ education and to continue academic activities despite the prevailing circumstances.

He noted that following the tragic Thonglabi incident on April 7, the normal functioning of educational institutions and government offices was significantly affected for nearly a month. Consequently, Saturday was declared a working day for all government departments to address pending tasks. Singh mentioned that once the backlog is cleared, another holiday will be announced for Saturday.

The April 7 incident in Thonglabi village, located in Bishnupur district, involved suspected Kuki militants throwing bombs at a home, resulting in the deaths of a 5-year-old boy and his 6-month-old sister, while their mother sustained serious injuries. This incident occurred while the family was asleep.

On Monday, Chief Minister Singh participated in the inauguration of a three-day workshop titled “Improving School Education in Manipur: Implementation of NEP-2020, Challenges, and Opportunities.”

Quoting Nelson Mandela, he emphasized that education is the most powerful tool to change the world. He added that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to achieve the goal of a developed India by 2047. Singh also highlighted that teaching in the mother tongue up to class 5 enhances children’s learning capabilities.

He stressed that the responsibility of making NEP 2020 successful lies not only with the government but also with all citizens. Collaboration among the government, employees, and the public is essential for its success.

Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goyal remarked that India is progressing towards becoming a developed nation by the centenary of its independence, with NEP 2020 playing a crucial role in this journey.

Meanwhile, Professor Ganga Prasad Prasain, President of Vidya Bharati Northeast Region, suggested that students should also receive skill development and vocational education starting from class 6 to help them become self-reliant.
