Kolkata, June 24: IAS officer R. Vimala has officially assumed the role of administrator for the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) following the dissolution of the municipal board. She arrived at the municipal office on Tuesday afternoon to begin her administrative duties.
The West Bengal government appointed her as the SMC administrator on Monday evening. This decision came just three days after Gautam Deb, a senior leader of the Trinamool Congress, resigned from the mayor’s position in Siliguri.
R. Vimala, who is also the principal secretary of the North Bengal Development Department, will serve a six-month term as the new administrator of SMC.
Upon taking charge, R. Vimala outlined her priorities. Her immediate challenge is to address the flooding issues caused by continuous rainfall in various wards and neighborhoods of Siliguri.
She stated to the media, “Our primary goal is to ensure that civic services are not disrupted in any way.” She also mentioned that she has met with officials from relevant departments regarding the current monsoon situation.
Discussions were held concerning the drainage issues in Siliguri. According to R. Vimala, immediate steps will be taken to resolve the flooding and drainage problems as quickly as possible.
On this day, SMC Commissioner Ashwini Roy, officials from various departments, and a coordinator from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were present to welcome the new SMC administrator.
Upon her arrival, Roy greeted R. Vimala with flowers. Following this, a delegation from the BJP, led by opposition leader Amit Jain, paid a courtesy visit to the new administrator.
Amit Jain stated, “I went to pay a courtesy visit to the administrator. We discussed the current situation of the city in detail, addressing critical issues such as waterlogging, roads, and drainage systems. She is an experienced administrator, and we hope to receive her support in the city’s development in the coming days.”
