Over 3.9 Million Rooftop Solar Systems Installed Under PM Surya Home Scheme, Benefiting Over 4.8 Million Families: Government

New Delhi, July 28: The central government announced on Tuesday that under the PM Surya Home: Free Electricity Scheme, a total of 3,972,447 rooftop solar (RTS) systems have been installed across the country. Since the scheme’s launch in February 2024, over 4,802,717 families, including those in rural areas, have benefited from it.

According to the government, during the financial year 2025-26 alone, 1,871,000 rooftop solar systems were established, adding 6.7 gigawatts (GW) of additional solar energy capacity. During this period, 2,271,000 families received benefits from the scheme.

Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pad Yesso Naik, stated that after the installation of rooftop solar systems under the scheme, consumers have seen a significant reduction in their electricity bills.

Reports from DISCOMs across the country indicate that over 1,893,000 beneficiaries, including rural families, received zero electricity bills at least once during a billing cycle.

He mentioned that the PM Surya Home: Free Electricity Scheme is a demand-driven initiative, allowing any residential consumer with a grid-connected electricity connection from the local DISCOM to benefit from it. Applications for installing rooftop solar systems can be submitted through a national portal.

The minister also noted that the scheme is not limited to the residential sector. Provisions exist for installing rooftop solar plants in government buildings, commercial establishments, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities. However, consumers in these categories do not receive Central Financial Assistance (CFA), as rooftop solar projects are considered financially viable without government support.

Meanwhile, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), it is projected that by 2030, approximately 50% of India’s additional electricity demand will be met by solar energy. Additionally, around 25% of the extra demand is expected to be fulfilled by other low-carbon sources such as wind, hydropower, and nuclear energy.
