New Delhi, July 28: Following an attack on a commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, Iran has received backing from Russia regarding its warning of retaliation. Russia asserts that Iran, as a sovereign nation, possesses the full capability to defend its rights.
In a statement to reporters, Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Russian President at the Kremlin, emphasized that Iran is entirely capable of protecting its rights. He described Iran as an independent nation that robustly defends its interests. Peskov also criticized Ukraine’s actions, labeling them as aggressive and indicating that the Kyiv government is targeting various countries.
According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Peskov noted, “Ukraine is attacking multiple nations. Previously, it targeted a crucial energy facility in Germany. Now, it has attacked Iran, aiming at an Iranian vessel.”
IRNA further reported that Peskov mentioned drone attacks by Ukraine on the facilities and terminals of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which includes Kazakhstan as a joint owner.
In a statement made on Monday, Peskov warned that the attack on the Iranian vessel represents another escalation of tension from Kyiv. He suggested that this could indicate the conflict might extend to a larger geographical area.
On Saturday, a privately-owned Iranian commercial ship, carrying rolled steel sheets, was targeted by a Ukrainian drone attack in the Caspian Sea.
Condemning the attack, Iran’s Foreign Ministry stated that it reflects Ukraine’s ongoing “irrational and hostile behavior” towards Iran.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, held Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responsible for the attack on the Iranian commercial vessel and issued a warning of retaliation.
In a post on the social media platform X, Araghchi wrote, “Ukraine has attacked an Iranian commercial vessel, resulting in the death of a sailor. This is a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter, carried out at the behest of Israel to draw Europe into its war.”
