Hyderabad Police Urges Media and Public to Protect Identity of Sexual Assault Victim

Hyderabad, April 9: The Malakajgiri Police Commissionerate in Hyderabad has made a public appeal to all media outlets, digital platforms, and citizens to refrain from publishing or broadcasting any material that could reveal the identity of a trainee pilot who has alleged sexual assault at a pilot training institute in the city.

Deputy Commissioner of Police C.H. Sridhar stated that the victim and her family have reported the spread of unverified and misleading information regarding the case. He clarified that the investigation is ongoing, and all legal procedures are being followed. Any speculation or unverified information at this stage could compromise the investigation and cause unnecessary distress.

The police emphasized that under Section 72 of the Indian Penal Code, revealing the identity of a sexual assault victim, either directly or indirectly, is a criminal offense. The Supreme Court has also made it clear in the case of Nipun Saxena vs. Union of India that any details that could disclose the victim’s identity, whether related to family, residence, educational institution, or workplace, are prohibited.

C.H. Sridhar further advised against indirectly revealing the victim’s identity. For instance, providing details about the training institute, locality, or family could inadvertently expose her identity. He urged the media and the public not to publish or broadcast any material that might disclose any information related to the victim, her family, or her education or work.

The police stressed that it is crucial for the investigation to proceed fairly and safely while ensuring the victim’s protection. The Begumpet Police have registered a case of sexual harassment against a former flight instructor from an aviation academy. This action was taken after a female trainee pilot made serious allegations against him.

According to the victim’s complaint, the accused lured her into a sexual relationship by promising good grades in the course. The incident reportedly occurred last year.

Based on the complaint, the police initiated legal action and registered a case under the relevant sections. During the investigation, they warned the public to remove or refrain from sharing any content on digital platforms, such as social media and video-sharing websites, that could reveal the victim’s identity.

Reports indicate that the accused is currently in his home state of Kerala, and the police are actively searching for him. Authorities have assured that the investigation is being conducted with complete fairness and sensitivity, prioritizing the victim’s safety.
