Kolkata, August 15: Humayun Kabir, the president of the Aam Janata Udayan Party (AJUP) and MLA from Nawada, has initiated a wall art campaign in the Rejingar Assembly constituency of Murshidabad district. This move comes as the region prepares for the upcoming by-election.
Although the Election Commission has yet to announce the by-elections for the Rejingar and Nandigram seats in West Bengal, Kabir has already declared that his son, Golam Nabi Azad, also known as Robin, will contest from Rejingar under the AJUP’s symbol, the flute. On Saturday, he began promoting his son’s candidacy through graffiti on local walls.
Kabir stated that many residents in Rejingar support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and are aligned with it. He accused the administration of acting at the behest of the BJP but asserted that AJUP would ultimately prevail.
He confidently proclaimed, “Golam Nabi Azad will win the election from Rejingar.” Kabir also claimed that despite the BJP’s victories and the rise of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the lotus symbol would not bloom in Rejingar.
In the recent assembly elections, Chief Minister Adhikari won from both Bhawanipur and Nandigram, while Humayun Kabir secured victories from both Rejingar and Nawada on an AJUP ticket. Subsequently, Adhikari resigned from the Nandigram seat, and Kabir vacated the Rejingar seat. Preliminary reports suggest that by-elections for both seats could occur within the next two months, although the Election Commission has not yet issued an official notification.
In the last assembly election, Kabir defeated BJP candidate Bapan Ghosh by a margin of 58,876 votes. The victory margin between him and the Trinamool Congress candidate, Ataur Rahman, was a significant 81,818 votes. Kabir garnered 51.62% of the votes, giving AJUP a strong foothold in Rejingar.
On July 10, Chief Minister Adhikari attended an organizational meeting in Rejingar, where he promised several development projects, including the construction of a bridge over the Bhagirathi River at Ramnagar Ghat. He also announced plans for another public meeting in Rejingar in August.
Given the recent political shifts in the state, the Rejingar by-election is expected to be a highly competitive and intriguing contest.
