New Delhi, March 2: As the lunar eclipse approaches on March 3, confusion surrounds the timing of Holika Dahan. In several regions of Uttar Pradesh and Braj Mandal, Holika Dahan will take place today, March 2. However, some areas plan to conduct the ritual after the eclipse.
The head priest of the Kalka Ji Temple in Delhi has clarified that Holika Dahan will be auspicious after the eclipse’s effects diminish. In an interview, he stated, βIn Sanatan Dharma, Holi symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Holika attempted to burn her devotee Prahlad, but she was consumed by the flames herself. This year, there is confusion regarding the timing of Holika Dahan due to the eclipse.β
He further explained that Holika Dahan is traditionally performed on the full moon day, which begins on the evening of March 2. However, the presence of Bhadra, an inauspicious period, complicates the timing. The eclipse will have an impact in Delhi until 7 PM, and thus, Holika Dahan can be performed after this time. This year, the ritual in Delhi will take place after 7 PM on March 3.
The tradition of Holika Dahan precedes the festival of colors, Holi, and has been observed for centuries. It is considered a sacred practice, believed to burn away negative energy and physical ailments. Holika Dahan is a festival of prosperity and is thought to help alleviate various hardships. During the ritual, offerings of black sesame seeds and coconuts are essential. Black sesame is said to eliminate hidden evils within us, while coconuts symbolize wealth and prosperity.
