
New Delhi, April 25: The new team at NITI Aayog has welcomed two prominent Bengali figures. Senior economist Dr. Ashok Lahiri has been appointed as Vice Chairman, while renowned scientist Dr. Gobardhan Das has been named a member.
This appointment marks another milestone in recognizing Bengal’s rich legacy of scholarship and nation-building. Dr. Lahiri will lead the nation towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India. With over four decades of experience, Dr. Lahiri is among India’s most seasoned economists. He has held several significant roles in policy-making, including Chief Economic Advisor and member of the Finance Commission, Asian Development Bank, World Bank, and IMF.
An alumnus of the Delhi School of Economics and Presidency University, Dr. Lahiri hails from Kolkata and is a leading scholar dedicated to the development and progress of Bengal. Dr. Gobardhan Das, a member of NITI Aayog, is a distinguished professor of molecular science. Over his nearly three-decade scientific career, he has specialized in immunology, infectious diseases, and cell biology. Dr. Das is internationally recognized for his research on the pathogenesis of tuberculosis.
After leading cutting-edge research at Yale University and Houston Methodist Hospital in the USA, as well as at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the National Research Foundation in South Africa, he chose to return home to serve his motherland.
An alumnus of Visva-Bharati University, Dr. Das became a professor at JNU and currently serves as the Director of IISER Bhopal. His professional excellence and global achievements are complemented by an inspiring personal story, having overcome unimaginable obstacles as a true son of the soil. Born into a family of Hindu Dalit refugees from Bangladesh, Dr. Das had to leave everything behind to escape persecution. He grew up in challenging conditions in Bengal, with his father being a poor farmer, forcing him to study under streetlights. He also endured the tragic loss of 17 family members in riots in West Bengal. Despite these hardships, his unwavering commitment to nation-building will serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for countless individuals across Bengal and the nation.
