Celebrating Sita Navami: Actresses Who Portrayed Janak Nandini on Screen

Mumbai, April 25: Sita Navami holds great significance in Sanatan Dharma, celebrated on the ninth day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Baisakh. This day marks the birth anniversary of Mata Sita, the wife of Lord Ram and the daughter of King Janak. Her character is revered as pure and inspiring within the faith, embodying compassion, sacrifice, and devotion. Over the years, her story has been depicted in various television shows and films.

Several actresses have portrayed this iconic role so well that audiences still remember them as Mata Sita. On this special occasion of Sita Navami, let’s take a look at those actresses who brought Janak Nandini to life on screen.

One of the most notable names is Deepika Chikhalia, who played Mata Sita in the famous television series ‘Ramayan’ by Ramanand Sagar. The show gained immense popularity, breaking TRP records when it was re-aired during the lockdown. Deepika received so much love for her portrayal that many began to worship her. To this day, she is considered the most memorable Sita, despite facing criticism for her modern attire.

Next is Smriti Irani, who took on the role of Mata Sita in the 2002 TV show ‘Ramayan’ by B.R. Chopra and Ravi Chopra, where Nitish Bharadwaj played Lord Ram. Although this version did not achieve the same success as Ramanand Sagar’s, it received positive feedback from viewers. Smriti later ventured into politics, but this role remains a significant part of her career.

In 2012, actress Neha Sargam portrayed Sita in the series ‘Ramayan: Sabke Jeevan Ka Aadhar’ under the banner of Sagar Pictures. While audiences appreciated her performance, the show did not last long.

Anand Sagar, son of Ramanand Sagar, created a new ‘Ramayan’ series in 2008, featuring Gurmeet Choudhary as Lord Ram and Debina Bonnerjee as Mata Sita. The two actors fell in love during the show and married in 2011. The dialogues in this series closely resembled the original, which resonated well with the audience.

In South Indian cinema, Nayanthara is a prominent name. She played Mata Sita in the 2011 Telugu film ‘Sri Ram Rajyam.’ Much like Deepika Chikhalia in Hindi cinema, Nayanthara is remembered for her exceptional portrayal of Sita in regional films. The film’s dialogues and visuals were both remarkable.

Additionally, in 1996, Smita Madhav played Sita alongside child actors in the Telugu film ‘Bal Ramayanam,’ where Junior NTR portrayed young Ram. Other actresses who have taken on the role include Shilpa Mukherjee in ‘Jai Hanuman’ (1997), Namrata Thapa in ‘Ravan,’ Madirakshi Mundle in ‘Siya Ke Ram,’ and Shivya Pathania in ‘Ram Siya Ke Love Kush.’
