Election Commission Suspends Six Police Officers in West Bengal for Misconduct

New Delhi, April 25: The Election Commission has taken strict action against negligence during the West Bengal Assembly elections. A letter was sent to the Chief Secretary of the West Bengal government, directing immediate action.

The Election Commission of India has suspended five police officers due to allegations of irregularities and bias during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Disciplinary proceedings have also been initiated against them. The suspended officials include IPS officers, as well as an SDPO and an officer in charge.

Among those suspended is Sandeep Sarkar, the officer in charge of Hingalganj Police Station, along with immediate orders for disciplinary action. Other suspended officers include Sandeep Garai (Additional Superintendent of Police, Diamond Harbour), Sajal Mandal (SDPO, Diamond Harbour), Moushumi Chakraborty (Inspector in Charge, Diamond Harbour Police Station), Ajay Bag (Inspector in Charge, Falta Police Station), and Shubhechha Bag (Officer in Charge, Usthi Police Station). A report regarding Sandeep Garai has also been ordered to be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Additionally, Dr. Ishani Pal, the Superintendent of Police in Diamond Harbour, has been warned for failing to ensure discipline and fairness among her subordinate officers during such sensitive matters as elections. The Chief Secretary has been instructed to implement the Commission’s directives immediately and submit a compliance report by 11:00 AM.

The Election Commission stated that, after considering the facts and circumstances, it was necessary to suspend the officials immediately and initiate disciplinary action for serious misconduct and failure to maintain fairness during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The Commission emphasized that ensuring fairness and adherence to the code of conduct during the electoral process is of utmost priority.
