Shimla, February 5: The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhu, has taken a significant step to improve the educational environment in the state. On Thursday, he announced a ban on the use of mobile phones by students in all government and private schools, effective March 1.
Students found with mobile phones will face a fine of ₹500, and their devices will be confiscated.
Additionally, the Chief Minister stated that parental participation in school counseling sessions will be mandatory.
This ban was announced during the closing ceremony of the 69th National School Games Under-19 Girls Handball Tournament held in Ghumarwin, Bilaspur district.
While addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to providing world-class education, enabling local students to compete on a global scale.
Under the new regulations, students will no longer be allowed to bring mobile phones onto school premises.
The Chief Minister detailed strict enforcement measures, confirming that any student caught with a phone will incur a ₹500 fine and have their device taken away.
He noted that the use of mobile phones during lunch breaks and school hours distracts students from their studies and personal development.
Citing his own experiences as a government school student, he reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing the quality of education.
In addition to educational reforms, Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted efforts to promote sports and sports tourism in the state.
He announced that the government will provide employment opportunities for female athletes participating in the Asian Games. Celebrating the Himachal team’s victory in the National Handball Championship, he declared a cash prize of ₹2 million.
The Chief Minister also shared that the government has significantly increased the daily diet allowance for student-athletes, raising it to ₹400 for state-level competitions and ₹500 for national events.
Furthermore, players traveling more than 200 kilometers for competitions will now receive air travel facilities to ensure their comfort and optimal performance.
