West Bengal Set to Change Name to Paschim Bang in Upcoming Bill

Kolkata, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : The West Bengal government is preparing to introduce a bill in the upcoming assembly session aimed at changing the state’s name to “Paschim Bang.” This proposal seeks to eliminate the use of names such as “West Bengal” or “Paschim Banga” in all languages.

Samik Bhattacharya, the BJP state president, addressed the media regarding this demand. He emphasized, “This is not just a request from me or Suvendu Adhikari. It’s not even a demand from any BJP worker. When Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee founded the Bharatiya Janata Sangh, it was a shared sentiment that we must not forget our history.”

He further explained, “Everyone was familiar with ‘Ang-Bang-Kaling,’ but after the partition of Bengal, we established what is now known as ‘Paschim Bang’ on June 20, 1947. At that time, all Hindu legislators from Congress voted in favor of this proposal. It is not ‘West Bengal’ nor any other version; it will be ‘Paschim Bang,’ whether in Bengali or English.”

In response to the ongoing by-elections in Nandigram and Rejinagar, state minister Agnimitra Paul remarked, “The people here understand whom to vote for. Everyone desires development.”

Regarding the name change bill, she stated, “It is a significant step to bring forth a bill for renaming West Bengal.”

Agnimitra Paul also criticized the opposition, saying, “If the opposition wins, the EVMs are fine; if they lose, the EVMs are faulty. The people of Bengal are aware of this, as are the 1.4 billion citizens of the country.”

Additionally, she commented on the arrest of Humayun Kabir, the head of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, during the Rejinagar assembly by-election, saying, “The reason for his arrest is his communal remarks. He is trying to create a negative atmosphere, which we will not allow. Everyone must go out and vote.”

Kabir was detained by West Bengal police amid the ongoing by-elections.
