Opposition Demands Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Amid Protests Across India

New Delhi, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : Protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar are gaining momentum across India. Opposition parties, including Congress, the Samajwadi Party, and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), are questioning the integrity of the Election Commission, alleging that it is not operating impartially. They claim that forms 6 and 7 are being misused to disenfranchise voters.

In New Delhi, Congress MP G.C. Chandrashekhar stated that the protests are aimed at safeguarding democracy. He referenced recent events in Bengaluru, asserting that the Election Commission is removing voters using form 7. “We are serious about this issue, and our fight will continue until the Chief Election Commissioner resigns,” he declared.

Samajwadi Party leader and former MLA Santosh Pandey criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of ridiculing democracy. He expressed concern that Gyanesh Kumar is acting as an agent for the BJP. “The public is aware of the BJP’s actions and how they have tarnished the image of institutions that people trust,” he said. Pandey insisted on the immediate removal of the CEC, suggesting that if Kumar has any sense of shame, he should resign voluntarily. If he fails to do so, he should be dismissed from his position, he added.

In Ranchi, JMM spokesperson Manoj Pandey echoed the sentiments of the opposition, emphasizing that the widespread public anger is directed at Gyanesh Kumar. He criticized the central government’s support for the CEC, calling for his resignation. “Form 6 is entirely unconstitutional, and the SIR process is unjust and illegal; it must also be revoked,” he stated.

The protests reflect a growing dissatisfaction with the electoral process, as opposition parties unite against what they perceive as unilateral actions by the Election Commission.
