New Delhi, March 9: A high-level meeting took place in New Delhi on Monday amid escalating conflicts in Western Asia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were present at the discussions.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, along with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan, initiated the meeting. Shortly after, Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah joined the session.
Earlier, Minister Jaishankar addressed both houses of Parliament regarding the situation in Western Asia. He emphasized that Prime Minister Modi is closely monitoring the changing dynamics in the region, where a significant number of Indian citizens reside. In light of recent developments, efforts are underway to safely repatriate Indian nationals.
He stated, “The government is committed to supporting Indian citizens at this time. Approximately 67,000 citizens have been safely brought back. We are making every effort to continue repatriating people from Western Asia.”
Jaishankar noted that a large number of Indian nationals live and work in the Gulf region, making the ongoing conflict a matter of particular concern for India. He revealed that a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting was held on March 1, chaired by the Prime Minister, to discuss airstrikes in Iran and subsequent attacks in several Gulf countries. The CCS expressed concern over the safety of the Indian community in the region and considered the impact on security, economic, and commercial activities.
The Minister remarked, “The fighting is escalating, and the security situation in the area has significantly deteriorated. We have observed that the conflict has spread to other countries, resulting in increased devastation and loss of life. Normal life and economic activities across the region have been visibly affected, and in some cases, have come to a halt. Therefore, we reiterated our appeal for dialogue and diplomacy on March 3, urging for an end to the conflict. I am confident that the entire house shares my sorrow over the loss of lives and property.”
