Hunger Strike Ends: Sonam Wangchuks Call for Accountability Begins

New Delhi, July 24: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has released a video message on social media after ending his hunger strike, which lasted for 26 days. The message reads, “Hunger strike ends, accountability begins!”
In the video, Wangchuk stated, “I have finally broken my fast after 26 days in the presence of Union Ministers J.P. Nadda, Dr. Jitendra Singh, and senior leaders from Leh-Ladakh’s top organization. Prior to this, 65 MPs from various political parties urged me to end my strike, promising to discuss the NEET paper and examination system in Parliament.”
Wangchuk further explained, “Ministers from the government also provided assurances. For two days, discussions took place regarding the need for written guarantees. This process took two additional days, forcing me to continue my fast. Ultimately, I received a written assurance from the government.”
He emphasized that he received commitments from the government and MPs of all political parties to discuss accountability regarding the deteriorating examination system in the Indian Parliament. The government also assured that families of those who committed suicide due to the recent exam paper leak would receive appropriate compensation, and no cases would be filed against peacefully protesting students and youth.
Wangchuk began his hunger strike on June 28 in support of the Cockroach People’s Party (CJP) movement at Jantar Mantar regarding the NEET paper leak. He was later hospitalized at Safdarjung Hospital due to health complications and subsequently transferred to Medanta Hospital following a directive from the Delhi High Court.
CJP leader Abhijit Dipke expressed relief on social media, stating, “We are grateful that Sir has ended his hunger strike after 26 days. Thank you for your extraordinary courage and sacrifice. By risking your life, you have awakened the conscience of the entire nation. Your life is invaluable to this country.”
