New York, July 24: A wave of panic swept through Manhattan’s Upper West Side on Thursday due to two separate stabbing incidents. An Asian man and a Jewish man were injured in these attacks.
The New York Police Department has arrested 51-year-old Raul Morales in connection with both cases. Authorities are now investigating whether these assaults were motivated by hate.
Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch shared updates on social media platform X, stating that both victims were promptly transported to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital, where they are receiving treatment. Fortunately, both are in stable condition and expected to recover.
Tisch remarked, “Two individuals were stabbed in two separate attacks on the Upper West Side. The victims include an Asian man and a Jewish man. Both have been hospitalized, and we are hopeful for their recovery.”
She confirmed the arrest of Raul Morales in relation to the attacks. The police investigation is ongoing, aiming to uncover the true motive behind these incidents.
According to the police commissioner, statements from victims and witnesses revealed that the assailant shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the attacks. This has led the NYPD to explore the possibility of these incidents being hate crimes.
Tisch also noted that there is no prior history of mental health issues associated with the suspect. However, initial investigations suggest that mental health may be a potential factor in this case.
So far, the investigation has not uncovered any connections between the suspect and the victims. New York City Mayor Jorhan Mamdani has also responded to the situation, stating that he has been briefed on the matter and is relieved that both injured individuals are currently stable.
Mamdani wrote on X, “I have been informed about the horrific stabbing attacks on an Asian and a Jewish individual on the Upper West Side. According to victims and witnesses, the attacker shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ during both incidents. I am glad that both victims are in stable condition.”
He praised the swift action of the NYPD, which led to the arrest of Raul Morales. The preliminary investigation suggests mental health as a potential cause, and police are also examining these attacks as possible hate crimes. “There is no place for such hate-fueled and despicable acts in our city,” he added.
