Heavy Rainfall Expected in South Bengal Due to Storm in the Bay of Bengal

Kolkata, July 1: The Meteorological Department announced on Wednesday that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several districts of South Bengal over the next few days due to a low-pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) located in Alipore, the low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression soon. This could lead to significant rainfall in South Bengal, including Kolkata, starting Saturday. Currently, intermittent rain is occurring in Kolkata and surrounding districts.

Heavy rainfall continued in Northern Bengal until Tuesday, resulting in landslides and flooding in some areas. The prolonged rainfall has disrupted daily life significantly.

After a slight improvement in weather conditions in Northern Bengal, South Bengal is now bracing for heavy rain. An RMC official provided this update on Wednesday.

The official stated, “A cyclonic circulation is present over the North Bay of Bengal and adjacent southern Bangladesh. As a result, a low-pressure area is expected to form in the northwestern Bay of Bengal around July 3. The southwest monsoon axis currently extends from Punjab to the North Bay of Bengal. Additionally, the influx of moisture from the Bay of Bengal has created favorable conditions for rainfall, including thunderstorms. Consequently, rain will continue in various districts of the state over the next few days, with heavy rainfall expected in South Bengal starting Saturday.”

Heavy rain is anticipated in three of the five districts of Northern Bengal: Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar. Other districts may experience strong winds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour along with thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rain will persist sporadically in the districts of South Bengal. The intensity of rainfall is expected to increase starting Saturday. On Sunday, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in Kolkata and the districts of South 24 Parganas, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, Bankura, and Purulia.

The Meteorological Department has predicted very heavy rainfall in the districts of West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, and Bankura on Monday.

On Tuesday, the maximum temperature in Kolkata and nearby areas was recorded at 31.2 degrees Celsius, which is 1.4 degrees Celsius above normal. The minimum temperature was 25.9 degrees Celsius, which is 1 degree Celsius below normal.
