Chennai, June 21: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecast heavy rainfall in six districts of Tamil Nadu. According to the weather department, widespread rain is likely to continue across the state for the next week.
The weather department indicated that an upper atmospheric cyclonic circulation over northern Kerala is influencing the weather in South India. This has led to increased rainfall activities in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions.
The RMC predicts heavy rain in various places in the hilly areas of Tirunelveli district, as well as in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Theni, and Kanyakumari districts on Sunday. Strong winds may also accompany the rainfall.
The active southwest monsoon over the Western Ghats and adjoining areas is sustaining the rainfall activities.
In addition to these districts, moderate rain is expected in the Western Ghats, the Cauvery Delta, and several parts of northern Tamil Nadu on Sunday and Monday. Officials noted that intermittent rain may continue in many districts due to the current weather conditions.
A heavy rain alert has also been issued for some areas in western and southern Tamil Nadu for Monday. Heavy rainfall along with strong winds is likely in the hilly regions of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, and Shivganga districts.
Meteorologists suggest that the current weather system could maintain rainfall activities in the state for at least a week. This is expected to provide relief to residents who have been suffering from heat and humidity in recent days. However, residents in districts under heavy rain warnings are advised to remain vigilant, as flooding and local disruptions may occur in hilly and low-lying areas.
In the capital city of Chennai, the sky is expected to be partly cloudy on Sunday. Moderate rain with thunder and lightning may occur in some areas of the city. However, no major weather warning has been issued for Chennai at this time.
The weather department has urged the public to keep an eye on official weather bulletins and updates, especially in districts where heavy rain and strong winds are predicted over the next two days.
