Dengue Outbreak Continues in Bangladesh, Death Toll Reaches Nine in 2026

Dhaka, June 22: The dengue outbreak in Bangladesh is escalating. As of Sunday morning, two more deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total fatalities for 2026 to nine.

According to local media reports, 220 new patients were admitted to hospitals during this period. This year, the total number of dengue cases has reached 4,900. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) of Bangladesh confirmed that the recent deaths occurred in the Barisal Division and the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) area.

DGHS statistics indicate that approximately 60% of dengue patients in 2026 are male, while 40% are female. Notably, in 2025, Bangladesh recorded 102,861 dengue cases, with 413 fatalities attributed to the disease.

Meanwhile, on June 2, Bangladesh’s Health Minister Sardar Shakhawat Hossain clarified that there are currently no plans to initiate a dengue vaccination program in the country. He stated that the vaccine is only being used in a limited number of countries, including Brazil, Malaysia, Australia, and Thailand, and has not yet received widespread global approval.

The Health Minister mentioned that the government will consult with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF on this matter. A decision regarding the vaccine will be made only if the international community provides positive feedback and the vaccine is deemed safe and effective.

At present, the government is not planning to launch a dengue vaccination campaign and aims to keep the public informed about the situation.

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. Common symptoms include high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and skin rashes. Most patients recover within one to two weeks, but severe cases may require hospitalization. Without timely treatment, the disease can be fatal.
