Kolkata, June 22: Mosaraf Hussain, a Trinamool Congress MLA and head of the state minority cell, resigned from his party position on Sunday.
Hussain, who represents the Itahar constituency in North Dinajpur district, announced his decision during a press conference at his residence.
While he cited his mother’s illness as a reason for his resignation, he also acknowledged his connections with a rebel faction of Trinamool legislators in the assembly. He expressed a desire to work under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for the state’s development in the future.
Hussain was notably absent during the inaugural session of the new state government’s budget on Friday, raising questions about his allegiance within the party. Speculation arose that he had distanced himself from Mamata Banerjee’s faction and was aligning with the rebel group led by opposition leader Ritabrata Banerjee.
Following his press conference on Sunday, these speculations were confirmed.
He stated, “Due to changes in the state government, I am unable to work as I did before. Additionally, my mother returned home from Makkah due to illness a few days ago. Under these circumstances, I have not been able to attend the assembly. Therefore, I do not wish to work for the Trinamool Congress minority cell.”
Out of five Trinamool MLAs from North Dinajpur district, four have already joined Ritabrata Banerjee’s rebel faction.
Meanwhile, Hussain praised Chief Minister Adhikari, recalling that he once served as an observer for the party in their district. He emphasized the importance of developing the region and mentioned that discussions with opposition leader Ritabrata Banerjee had already taken place.
On Monday, the new BJP government’s first budget for the financial year 2026-27 will be presented in the state assembly. Hussain indicated that he is likely to be present on that day.
