Ahmedabad, June 22: Tensions flared at a NEET re-examination center in Ahmedabad on Sunday due to disputes over dress codes and security protocols. Police intervened to restore order at the scene.
The incident occurred at R.J. Tibrewal Commerce College in the Vastrapur area, one of the centers for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) re-exam.
The situation escalated when a female student arrived wearing a hijab. According to officials, she was asked to remove it during the security check. The student’s mother objected, insisting that her daughter should be allowed to take the exam with the hijab on. Following discussions between the college principal, exam staff, and police, the student was ultimately permitted to wear her hijab during the examination.
This decision led to objections from some parents present, who argued that if Hindu religious symbols like ‘kalava’, ‘kanthi’, and ‘kangan’ were removed during checks, then exemptions should not be made in certain cases.
As news of the controversy spread, a crowd gathered outside the center, leading to protests. Members associated with Bajrang Dal and AIMIM activists arrived on the scene, further heightening tensions. Reports of minor scuffles emerged, prompting police to step in and manage the situation.
Senior officials, including Assistant Commissioner of Police Jayesh Bhrambhatt, arrived to control the crowd.
According to police, some individuals disrupting public order were removed from the area. Officials clarified that the procedure for removing religious items is standard under exam regulations, and those raising objections were counseled.
Authorities confirmed that the student was allowed to take the exam, and the situation was brought under control.
Stringent security measures had already been implemented at NEET re-exam centers across Gujarat to prevent any disturbances.
Police urged the public to maintain peace and refrain from spreading unverified information on social media.
Under the guidelines of the National Testing Agency, strict security arrangements were in place, including multi-layer frisking, identity verification, and rigorous rules enforced throughout the state.
