New Delhi, June 22: The fourth India-Africa Forum Summit has been postponed due to the Ebola virus outbreak in several African countries, according to a report. This situation highlights India’s increasing role in addressing Africa’s health needs, particularly in vaccine development and production.
An analysis by IOL indicates that the postponement of the summit draws attention to India’s rapid efforts to combat the Bundibugyo Ebola virus outbreak, which has been observed in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
Originally scheduled to take place from May 28 to 31, the summit was delayed following discussions between India and the African Union regarding the changing public health situation in Africa.
India’s focus is centered on the Serum Institute of India (SII), which is collaborating with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and Oxford University to expedite the development of a vaccine against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola.
Reports indicate that SII is utilizing its proven ChAdOx1 vaccine platform, which was widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic, to rapidly prepare clinical-grade doses that could be ready for trials within a few months.
This initiative serves as a reminder of India’s role during the COVID-19 crisis, when it emerged as a major supplier of affordable vaccines to developing countries, including several African nations.
The report also highlights India’s extensive engagement with Africa through humanitarian assistance, including recent food aid initiatives aimed at countries facing food insecurity and displacement challenges.
While African institutions such as the African Union and the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) are coordinating efforts to tackle the Ebola outbreak, the report notes that vaccine research and large-scale manufacturing capabilities still heavily rely on external partners.
Moreover, the postponed summit underscores the need for increased investment in Africa’s biotechnology and vaccine manufacturing ecosystem to strengthen long-term health security across the continent.
