Kolkata, 16 August : The weather department has once again issued an alert for heavy rainfall and possible disasters in Bengal. Due to the active low-pressure system and cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, rainfall is expected to continue across the state for the next few days.

On Saturday, most districts of South Bengal are likely to receive light to moderate rain. There is a possibility of thunderstorms and rainfall with wind speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour in districts like South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia, and Bankura. Kolkata and nearby areas will see partly cloudy skies throughout the day.
In North Bengal, districts such as Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar are expected to receive light to moderate rain on Saturday. However, conditions will change from Sunday. The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall in these districts on Sunday and Monday. Continuous rain may increase the risk of landslides in the hilly areas of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Sikkim. Besides, the water levels of rivers like Teesta, Torsa, and Jaldhaka are likely to rise due to intense rainfall.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is less likely in South Bengal compared to North Bengal. However, humidity and discomfort will trouble people. The day will be hot and humid with occasional sunshine, while a slight dip in night temperatures is expected.
In Kolkata, the sky will generally remain cloudy with chances of light rain and thunder in some areas.
On Saturday, Kolkata’s maximum temperature was recorded at 33°C and the minimum at 27°C, with 2.8 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
