Haryana: Three Candidates Nominate for Two Rajya Sabha Seats

Chandigarh, March 5: Three candidates have officially submitted their nominations for the two Rajya Sabha seats from Haryana. Sanjay Bhatia from the BJP and Karmveer Singh Bauddh from the Congress filed their nominations on Thursday. These seats became vacant following the end of the terms of BJP Rajya Sabha members Kiran Chaudhary and Ram Chander Jangra.

BJP leader Satish Nandal has also entered the race as an independent candidate, making the competition more intriguing. With three candidates vying for two seats, the election is expected to be competitive.

Former MP Sanjay Bhatia submitted his nomination in the presence of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and other senior leaders. Bhatia is considered close to Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and has extensive experience in organizational politics, having previously served as the BJP’s state general secretary. He has also been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Bhatia has previously been a member of the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Home Affairs, the Joint Committee on MPs’ Salaries and Allowances, and the Advisory Committee for the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises.

On the other hand, the Indian National Congress has fielded Karmveer Singh Bauddh to strengthen its Dalit vote bank. Bauddh recently retired as an administrative officer from the state civil secretariat. At the time of his nomination, he was accompanied by 34 Congress MLAs, including former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Meanwhile, Satish Nandal from Bohar village in Rohtak submitted his nomination around 2 PM at the assembly. He was joined by independent MLAs Savitri Jindal, Devender Kadyan, and Rajesh Joon.

Before filing his nomination, Nandal mentioned that some legislators suggested the need for an independent candidate in the election, prompting his decision to run. Nandal has previously been a leader of the Indian National Lok Dal and is considered a political rival of Bhupinder Singh Hooda. He contested against Hooda in the Gadhi Sampla-Kiloi assembly seat in 2009, 2014, and 2019 but did not succeed.

To win one of the Rajya Sabha seats in the 90-member Haryana Assembly, 31 votes are required. Currently, the BJP has the support of 48 MLAs, including three independents, while the Congress holds 37 MLAs.

Nandal’s entry as an independent candidate adds further excitement to the election. Voting is scheduled for March 16.
