Dehradun, June 1: Former Cabinet Minister Harak Singh Rawat has sharply criticized the state government regarding the increasing migration and administrative neglect in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. He emphasized that Pauri has been a pivotal center for the Uttarakhand movement, and the region’s role in the state’s formation cannot be overlooked. Unfortunately, he noted, this district has faced the most neglect since the state’s inception.
Rawat pointed out that despite Pauri being the divisional headquarters, the necessary officials are not stationed there. He alleged that most senior officers from departments like education, horticulture, and revenue are operating from Dehradun. This situation diminishes the significance of the divisional headquarters. He questioned how local issues could be resolved and the development of the mountains could be expected if divisional officials do not reside in Pauri.
He further explained that this neglect is a key reason for the ongoing migration from the hills. Residents are forced to travel to Dehradun for even minor administrative needs, wasting both time and resources. Rawat asserted that strengthening local administration is essential for providing employment, amenities, and a better quality of life for the people.
Additionally, he raised concerns about the future of governance in the event that Gairsain is declared the capital. If officials are not present in Pauri now, how can one expect them to be in Gairsain later? He urged the government to take this issue seriously and ensure regular official presence in the area.
Rawat also revealed that the Congress party is preparing to protest over this issue. Following Rahul Gandhi’s program, a large rally and a siege of the divisional headquarters will be organized with party workers. He warned that if neglect towards Pauri continues, Congress will escalate this fight with greater determination.
