Gulmarg Gondola Service Set to Resume on June 2 After Technical Glitch Strands 320 Tourists

Srinagar, May 31: Officials announced on Sunday that the Gulmarg Gondola cable car project will resume normal operations starting Tuesday. The services will recommence following a successful expert trial run scheduled for Monday.

The news of the gondola services resuming has delighted tourists, as this cable car project is a major attraction at the ski resort.

Before allowing the public to access the services again on Tuesday, experts will conduct a test trial of the gondola system on Monday to assess its operational safety and technical performance. The gondola had been closed to tourists until June 1 due to a technical malfunction that forced officials to halt operations for repairs.

During this closure, authorities ordered full refunds for all tickets booked for travel dates between May 25 and June 1. On May 25, 320 individuals were stranded in the gondola cabins due to the malfunction, but all were safely rescued.

The extensive rescue operation, which lasted six hours, was successfully carried out by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, SDRF, and local authorities. Passengers were trapped in 65 cabins, some hanging 500 feet above the ground.

All passengers were rescued without any major injuries. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has ordered an official investigation into the causes of the technical failure.

It is believed that this closure has resulted in significant financial losses for the corporation and adversely affected tourism-related activities during the peak season in Gulmarg.
