Gujarats 2027 Census Self-Enumeration to Begin on May 17

Gandhinagar, May 12: Officials announced during a press conference in Gandhinagar that preparations for the 2027 Census are accelerating. Gujarat will deploy over 109,000 enumerators for a two-week self-enumeration campaign starting at the end of this month.

The Directorate of Census Operations in Gujarat stated that citizens across the state will be able to voluntarily submit details about their homes, household facilities, and properties through the self-enumeration portal from May 17 to May 31. This digital participation system is being introduced for the first time in the national census.

Providing information about the process, Census Operations Director Sujal Mayatra emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance public participation through digital governance measures and improve the speed and accuracy of data collection.

He mentioned that the self-enumeration portal has been launched, allowing each citizen to actively participate and provide their information.

“I urge all citizens to make the most of this opportunity to obtain better and quicker statistics,” he added.

A statewide House Listing Operation (HLO) will be conducted by census officials through door-to-door surveys. The HLO will run from June 1 to June 30 using a specially developed mobile application for census fieldwork.

Officials indicated that the first phase will focus on counting households and collecting housing-related data, while the population census will be conducted separately in February 2027.

According to the brief information shared, Gujarat comprises 34 districts, 268 talukas, 18,117 villages, 197 towns, and 17 municipal corporations.

For the census, the state has prepared 51 Principal Census Offices (PCOs), 624 charges, and 110,598 House Listing Blocks (HLBs).

To carry out this task, the state will deploy 109,038 census personnel, along with a reserve team of 11,169 employees. Additionally, 18,254 supervisors and another reserve team of 2,187 supervisors will also be appointed for this work.

Mayatra stated that each census worker is expected to collect data related to approximately 700 to 800 individuals during the 30-day field operation period.

Officials mentioned that intensive training sessions for census staff are ongoing, and these will continue for two weeks to familiarize employees with the processes and digital systems.
