Gujarat Local Body Elections: Vote Counting Underway, Candidates Express Confidence in Victory

Gandhinagar, April 28: Vote counting for the local body elections in Gujarat is taking place today. Results are expected to be announced soon.

Payal Sakaria, the Aam Aadmi Party candidate from Surat Municipal Corporation, stated, “In 2021, the public entrusted us with the role of opposition. We have consistently received support from the people over the past five years. This election shows that the public is ready for change. They have voted for transformation.”

Dinanath Mahajan, the BJP candidate from Surat, expressed confidence, saying, “The people of Ward Number 23 have blessed us. The BJP has been developing the region for the past 30 years. Voters choose us based on development issues. We expect to win all 120 seats in the Surat Municipal Corporation.”

Congress candidate Amit Dhanani remarked, “I am contesting against the mayor. The corruption by the BJP over the past five years has led the public to support Congress.”

The vote counting will determine the results for 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats, where voting took place on April 26. Officials have ensured security and administrative arrangements across all districts for the counting process.

With over 9,000 seats contested, this election is one of the largest grassroots electoral exercises in the state. A total of 32,748 nominations were filed, and after withdrawals, more than 26,000 candidates remained in the fray, with several candidates elected unopposed before voting began.

Major political parties, including the BJP, Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party, participated alongside independents and smaller parties. Voting was conducted at thousands of polling stations using electronic voting machines (EVMs).

According to data released by the State Election Commission, voter turnout varied across different levels in these local body elections. Municipal corporations saw a turnout of 49.02%, indicating lower participation in urban areas. In contrast, municipalities recorded a 59.50% turnout.

Rural bodies experienced higher voter engagement, with 61.69% turnout in district panchayats and 62.38% in taluka panchayats. By-elections in 11 municipalities saw a turnout of 55.38%. Officials have stated that results will be announced only after all votes have been counted.
