Bengaluru, August 13: Congress MLA GS Patil submitted his nomination for the Karnataka Assembly Speaker position on Thursday, in the presence of Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
During the nomination process, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, along with several ministers and senior leaders, were also in attendance. Meanwhile, Congress MLC Saleem Ahmed filed his nomination for the Karnataka Legislative Council Chairperson position. Elections for this role are scheduled for Friday.
Saleem Ahmed submitted his nomination papers at the office of the Legislative Council Secretary, accompanied by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. In a separate meeting, BJP MLCs, led by opposition leader Chaluvarayaswamy, discussed the upcoming elections for the Legislative Council Chairperson and various development projects.
Notably, former Chairperson of the Karnataka Legislative Council, Basavaraj Horatti, stated that he was compelled to sign his resignation letter as he was not given the opportunity to resign on the day he intended.
Horatti mentioned that he had provided all relevant information regarding his resignation to the Governor but had not received any confirmation about whether his resignation was accepted. He expressed his disappointment with the state government’s handling of the situation, stating, “I have conveyed everything to the Governor. I have not received any information from him. He has not informed me whether I have been relieved of my position or if my resignation has been accepted.”
He added, “As far as I know, if I have been appointed as the pro tem speaker, it means my resignation has been accepted.” Horatti expressed his discontent with the state government’s actions, saying, “I am saddened by this step taken by the state government. I have done nothing wrong. I am hurt. I have served in the house for 46 years. I had to resign out of compulsion. I did not want a confrontation.”
He also noted that he had discussed the timing of his resignation with Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and they had reached an agreement regarding the election of the Vice Chairperson on August 14. “I had mentioned that I would express my gratitude that day before submitting my resignation. I had even announced this,” he concluded.
