Grand Bhasma Aarti Celebrated at Mahakaleshwar Temple on Papmochani Ekadashi

Ujjain, March 14: A large number of devotees gathered at the world-renowned Baba Mahakal temple in Ujjain to celebrate Papmochani Ekadashi, which falls on the eleventh day of the waning phase of Chaitra month. Enthusiastic devotees eagerly awaited the grand adornment of Baba Mahakal, as it is believed that visiting the deity on this day absolves one of sins and brings peace and happiness into life.

From 4 AM on Saturday, the temple complex was filled with a heavy influx of devotees. During the aarti, attendees chanted “Jai Mahakal,” showcasing their devotion and faith.

The aarti is conducted by the Mahanirvani Akhara, where devotees experience the divine presence of Mahakal in both formless and form. Following the Bhasma Aarti, a ritual bathing of Mahakal is performed, accompanied by worship using Panchamrit and a special bathing with sacred ash.

After the Bhasma Aarti, Baba Mahakal was adorned beautifully, with his face (Mukharvind) decorated exquisitely. A distinct tripundra was marked on his forehead, and the moon was elegantly placed atop. A new crown was adorned, along with a garland of fresh flowers and bilva leaves, enhancing the overall beauty of the decoration. This captivating sight brought joy to all present.

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India and holds a special significance. It is the only south-facing self-manifested Shiva Lingam in the world. It is believed that the south direction symbolizes death, and Mahakal is the lord of death. During Brahma Muhurta, a significant number of devotees from across the country and abroad flock to witness the extraordinary Bhasma Aarti.
