Washington, April 28: New revelations are emerging in the investigation of the shooting incident during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. U.S. authorities have detained the suspect, Colt Thomas Allen, and are conducting extensive interrogations. Officials have reported that Allen meticulously plotted an attack targeting the President and senior administration officials.
Authorities revealed that Allen informed family members and a former employer about his intentions shortly before the attack, attaching a document titled “Apology and Explanation” in an email.
In the email, Allen expressed, “I sincerely apologize for any trouble I have caused, and I do not expect forgiveness for what I am about to do. The actions of my representatives impact me, and I am no longer willing to tolerate crimes.”
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that after reviewing the written document, there is no doubt that Allen attempted to assassinate the President. His message indicated that he would only target Secret Service personnel if necessary.
He noted that hotel staff and guests would not be harmed unless absolutely required, suggesting he could potentially kill anyone if the situation demanded. This admission highlights the potential severity of the threat. Investigators indicated that the email appeared to be scheduled for sending at a specific time before the attack.
Moreover, the suspect traveled to multiple locations and assessed his position within the hotel before executing the attack. Authorities reported that Colt Thomas Allen began preparations well before the event on April 25. He was monitoring the President’s scheduled arrival and had arranged accommodations at the same location.
According to a federal affidavit, Allen booked a stay at the Washington Hilton from April 24 to 26, shortly after President Donald Trump publicly confirmed his attendance at the dinner. Allen started his journey by train from his home near Los Angeles on April 21, arriving in Chicago on April 23. He then traveled to Washington, D.C., arriving around 1 PM on April 24.
By approximately 3 PM, he checked into the hotel and remained there overnight, positioning himself within the same building where the high-profile event was to take place. Officials noted that Colt Thomas Allen was aware of the dinner and the presence of senior U.S. leaders. The event commenced around 8 PM in a banquet hall located on the concourse level of the hotel, attended by the President, Vice President, and cabinet officials.
About 40 minutes later, Allen initiated his plan. Acting Attorney General Todd Blench reported that around 8:40 PM, Allen approached a security checkpoint on the hotel terrace level. Authorities stated he passed through a magnetometer carrying a long gun. Moments later, gunfire was heard, prompting an immediate police response. A Secret Service officer stationed at the checkpoint was shot in the chest but survived due to wearing a bulletproof vest.
The officer returned fire, leading to Allen’s swift apprehension. Blench emphasized that this attack was not spontaneous but rather well-planned. Investigators revealed that Allen possessed multiple weapons, including a 12-gauge shotgun and a .38 caliber pistol, which he purchased in California and transported across state lines before arriving in Washington.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro noted that the sequence of events clearly indicates intent. She stated that Allen was fully aware of his actions. He decided to breach the banquet hall, but law enforcement officials intercepted him before he could reach the main event. Investigators are currently reviewing additional evidence from the suspect’s hotel room, electronic devices, and travel history. They are also examining whether anyone assisted him in this plot.
