Todd McClay Highlights PM Modis Role in Advancing India-New Zealand FTA

New Delhi, April 28: New Zealand’s Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay has emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Chris Luxon’s strong leadership has played a crucial role in rapidly advancing the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This collaboration has led to the completion of the deal in a record nine months.

In an exclusive interview with a news agency, McClay noted that both leaders have fostered friendly relations through global meetings. Last year, Prime Minister Luxon visited India with the largest trade delegation ever sent by a New Zealand Prime Minister to any country.

“I have great respect for Prime Minister Modi’s achievements and significant leadership. It was an honor to meet and speak with him at the time of the agreement’s conclusion,” McClay stated.

He further mentioned that the governments have done their part in negotiations, and now the business sector should step up, with continued support from the governments.

McClay indicated that more trade delegations will be brought to India to strengthen ties, and he encouraged Indian businesses to visit New Zealand as well.

“Both sides can organize trade delegations. Ultimately, businesses should embrace this agreement and seek opportunities. I believe these opportunities will be significant,” he remarked.

The minister expressed eagerness to host Prime Minister Modi in New Zealand, stating, “He is warmly welcome. It would be a great honor for us to host him.”

He highlighted that India and New Zealand are two true democracies, with India being the largest and New Zealand one of the oldest democracies in the world.

McClay also pointed out the strong cricketing ties between the two nations, noting that this year marks 70 years of sports cooperation between India and New Zealand, which is commendable. He mentioned a recent significant cricket match, the T20 final, which India won.

In a light-hearted manner, McClay added, “Prime Minister Modi, you are welcome to New Zealand. Bring your cricket team along; we would love to see another match!”
