Lucknow, June 24: Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel emphasized the importance of delivering agricultural research and innovations directly to farmers. She stated that merely relying on research papers and lectures will not resolve the challenges faced in agriculture. The real benefits of new technologies, tools, and scientific research will only be realized when they are practically applied in farmers’ fields. She called for empowering Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) to enhance farmers’ income and make agriculture more profitable.
While presiding over the ‘Discussion on Agricultural Challenges at the FPO Level’ event organized by NABARD in Lucknow, Governor Patel stressed the need for better coordination among universities, research institutions, and FPOs. She highlighted the necessity of adopting a scientific approach to tackle challenges in the agricultural sector, including climate change, water conservation, soil fertility, crop diversification, and marketing.
The Governor directed agricultural universities and research institutions to prepare concrete data on the impact of their research and technologies. It should be clear how much production has increased due to the use of new technologies, how many farmers have benefited, and how much their income has improved. She also encouraged students to adopt organic farming in their fields and inspire farmers to do the same. During the event, the Governor observed various agricultural products, fruits, and value-added items showcased by different FPOs.
She placed special emphasis on providing better market access for women farmers and small producers, strengthening processing facilities, and enhancing product quality. She stated that every plan and program should center around farmers and the general public. The production targets set for universities should ensure the purchase of their products, allowing the direct benefits of research and production to reach farmers. She also highlighted the need to maximize the use of government schemes and resources and establish accountability at the departmental level.
Sharing her experiences from Gujarat, the Governor noted that significant changes are possible through public participation, women’s empowerment, and administrative coordination. She mentioned efforts to connect tribal women farmers to the market and campaigns in the education sector, stating that collective efforts are essential for developing a successful model of progress.
The Governor urged officials to adopt a positive mindset and results-oriented approach, ensuring that the benefits of central and state government schemes reach the last individual. She called for timely suggestions to the government regarding agricultural challenges and a commitment to solving the issues faced by FPOs.
