
Dehradun, February 23: Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, B.L. Verma, stated on Sunday that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, various welfare schemes have established a robust foundation for integrating persons with disabilities into the mainstream.
While inaugurating the 30th edition of the Divya Kala Mela at Rangers Ground in Dehradun, Minister Verma announced that the current budget has allocated ₹375 crores for the purchase and fitting of assistive devices through the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), benefiting a significant number of individuals with disabilities.
Pradeep A., Director of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), highlighted that this fair is a comprehensive initiative aimed at connecting disabled entrepreneurs with markets, financial assistance, and employment opportunities. During the event, registration for assistive devices, institutional awareness stalls, and job fairs are being organized to further strengthen initiatives for empowering persons with disabilities.
Uttarakhand Governor Lieutenant General Gurmeet Singh emphasized the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and technological innovation in creating new opportunities for persons with disabilities, asserting that technology serves as an equalizer and does not discriminate.
The Governor also stressed the importance of promoting products created by disabled artisans in global markets to gain international recognition for their talents.
He stated, “With determination and capability, persons with disabilities can excel in any field. The Divya Kala Mela is not just an event but a powerful platform of inspiration and enthusiasm that highlights the significant contributions of persons with disabilities to India’s economic development.”
MP Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah from Tehri described the Divya Kala Mela as more than just an exhibition, calling it a catalyst for social change and empowerment. She praised the efforts of the Indian government and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in bringing such initiatives to Uttarakhand.
The MP referenced India’s achievements in the Paralympic Games, noting that the talents among persons with disabilities continue to bring pride to the nation, demonstrating that opportunities and support can lead to excellence.
Legislator Khajan Das commended the fair as a commendable initiative that provides respect and opportunities to persons with disabilities, stating that such platforms help boost confidence and promote social inclusion.
The 30th edition of the Divya Kala Mela, held in Dehradun, marks a significant achievement in a series of nationwide events. In the previous 29 editions, approximately 2,362 disabled entrepreneurs participated, generating over ₹23 crores in business.
The government has also approved loans exceeding ₹20 crores to support disabled entrepreneurs, reflecting its commitment to their economic empowerment. Additionally, around 3,131 candidates participated in job fairs organized under this initiative, with 1,007 selected and over 313 receiving job offers.
