New Delhi, June 17: India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, P. Harish, stated that the UN Charter symbolizes hope for the people of India. He symbolically signed the preamble of the UN Charter, commemorating the historic document that paved the way for the establishment of the United Nations in 1945.
After signing, he emphasized that the significance of the UN Charter for India’s 1.4 billion citizens can be summed up in one word: ‘hope.’
These signatures were part of the preparations for UN Charter Day, celebrated on June 26, aiming to reaffirm commitment to the principles of the Charter. UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock proposed the symbolic signing, describing it as a renewed expression of our collective commitment to the Charter’s goals and principles.
On June 25, 1945, A. Ramaswamy Mudaliar signed the original Charter on behalf of India in San Francisco. India was one of the 50 founding members of the United Nations. Its participation highlighted its role as a founding member even before independence, linked to the principles of multilateralism and international cooperation.
A note from Baerbock’s office regarding this year’s event stated that reaffirming commitment to the Charter is particularly crucial as the United Nations faces various pressures and challenges.
The note read, “Eighty-one years after signing the Charter, we stand at a crossroads. The United Nations is not only under political and financial pressure but is also facing attacks.” It added, “This year’s UN Charter Day serves not only as an opportunity for reflection but also as a call to action.”
