New Delhi, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian government has announced a substantial increase in the minimum support price (MSP) for essential Rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season. This decision was made during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The most significant MSP hike is for Kusum, which will see an increase of ₹675 per quintal. Additionally, the MSP for rapeseed and mustard will rise by ₹413 per quintal. Other crops also received notable increases: lentils will see a rise of ₹390 per quintal, barley by ₹136 per quintal, chickpeas by ₹83 per quintal, and wheat by ₹25 per quintal.
This increase aims to ensure that farmers receive a profitable price for their produce. An official statement indicated that the MSP adjustments align with a commitment made in the central budget of 2018-19, which mandates that MSP be set at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average production cost.
In recent years, the government has been promoting the cultivation of pulses and oilseeds, providing relatively higher MSPs for these crops. From 2014-15 to 2025-26, wheat procurement increased to 37.15 million metric tons (MMT), up from 22.54 MMT between 2004-05 and 2013-14. Similarly, the procurement of six Rabi crops rose to 39.21 MMT during the same period, compared to 23.02 MMT previously.
Payments to wheat-producing farmers as MSP surged to ₹7.31 lakh crore from 2014-15 to 2025-26, compared to ₹2.56 lakh crore from 2004-05 to 2013-14. Furthermore, payments to farmers of six Rabi crops increased to ₹8.36 lakh crore in the same timeframe, significantly up from ₹2.65 lakh crore in the earlier period.
