New Delhi, August 27: The devastating floods in Nepal have resulted in the tragic loss of 162 lives, with hundreds, including security personnel and tourists, still missing. In response to this disaster, leaders from around the world have expressed their condolences and solidarity with the affected communities.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, conveyed her deep sorrow over the tragedy and pledged maximum assistance from Europe. In a post on the social media platform X, she stated, “The catastrophic floods in Nepal and China have severely impacted many communities. My thoughts are with all those affected, especially the families who have lost loved ones or are still waiting for news. We also remember the brave rescue workers helping people in these challenging conditions.”
She noted that the Copernicus system has been activated to map the affected areas and assist in ground-level relief efforts. The European Union is prepared to provide additional support as needed.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his deep sadness in a post on X, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the severe floods in Nepal and China. Many lives have been lost, numerous people are missing, and there has been widespread devastation. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a swift recovery to the injured. My full solidarity and sympathy go out to all those affected by this disaster.”
The United Nations is collaborating with the Nepalese government in ongoing relief and rescue efforts. UN teams and humanitarian partners are rapidly mobilizing relief supplies and personnel to assist flood-affected communities.
Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen also expressed his sorrow over the disaster in a post on X, stating, “Our thoughts are with all those affected by the devastating floods in the Nepal-China border region. We extend our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones and wish strength to those waiting for news of their family or close ones. We appreciate the efforts of Nepalese authorities and disaster relief workers operating under difficult circumstances. We are continuously monitoring the situation, including the status of Dutch citizens in the affected area.”
Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė shared her condolences on X, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and property due to the catastrophic floods in Nepal and China. My thoughts are with the families, affected individuals, and the brave teams engaged in relief and rescue efforts on the ground. I am reassured that Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry is keeping a close watch on the situation.”
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also expressed her sorrow regarding the floods in Nepal. In her post on X, she stated, “In light of the extensive flooding in Nepal, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Nepalese government and its people. According to local media reports, five Japanese nationals are missing, which is a matter of deep concern for me.”
The Japanese embassy in Nepal has made several attempts to contact them but has not yet succeeded. The embassy has also requested assistance in locating them. Takaichi expressed her concern for the safety of Japanese citizens, the Nepalese people, and all foreign nationals residing there. She fervently prays for their safety.
