France Advances to Round of 16 in FIFA World Cup After Defeating Sweden

New Jersey, July 1: France secured a spot in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating Sweden 3-0. Kylian Mbappé showcased his talent once again, scoring two goals, while Bradley Barcola added another to the tally.

This victory continues France’s impressive streak in the tournament. They have now become the first team in World Cup history to score at least three goals in five consecutive matches.

With his two goals in this match, Mbappé has reached a total of 18 goals in World Cup history. He has now moved into second place among the all-time top scorers, surpassing Germany’s Miroslav Klose. Only Lionel Messi, with 19 goals, stands ahead of him.

France created several opportunities in the first half but struggled to break through Sweden’s strong defense. Eventually, Mbappé displayed his exceptional footwork, delivering a brilliant shot from inside the penalty box to give his team the lead.

Early in the second half, France took full control of the match. Michael Olise provided a fantastic pass to Barcola, who converted it into a goal. Shortly after, Olise assisted Mbappé again, allowing the French captain to score his second goal without error. This marked Mbappé’s 10th goal in World Cup knockout matches.

After the match, France’s manager Didier Deschamps expressed pride in the team’s performance, stating, “We are proud of our display, and this victory is very special for us. The remaining matches in the Round of 32 made it clear that no game is easy here. We could have capitalized better on our chances in the first half, but overall, the team played excellently and deserved the win.”

This marks France’s seventh appearance in the World Cup pre-quarterfinals. They previously reached this stage in 1986, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018, and 2022. Only Brazil has reached the Round of 16 more times than France. Next, they will face Paraguay on July 5 in Philadelphia, aiming for their third consecutive World Cup final.

Deschamps added, “Our next match is in four days, and our full focus will be on that. We will enjoy today’s victory, but we won’t look too far ahead. Paraguay is a very strong and resilient team from South America. They have many talented players, and they didn’t reach this point by chance. Therefore, we need to approach the next match with the same concentration and determination.”
