West Bengal Chief Minister Meets Football Legend Cafu, Receives Special Jersey

Kolkata, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : Brazilian football icon Cafu, a World Cup winner, met with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday at Nabanna. The meeting also included Shatadru Dutta, who was present during the discussions.

Photos from the meeting were shared on the Chief Minister‘s official X handle, highlighting the significance of the visit. Adhikari welcomed Cafu with a bouquet and presented him with an image of Swami Vivekananda. In return, Cafu gifted the Chief Minister a signed football jersey along with a football.

Cafu, known as one of the greatest right-backs in football history, holds the record for the most appearances for the Brazilian national team with 142 matches. He was a key player in Brazil’s 1994 World Cup-winning team and captained the squad during their 2002 triumph.

Prior to his visit to Kolkata, Cafu was seen in Mumbai teaching young girls the fundamentals of football. He visited the Dreaming in Slums Foundation, where he spent time with aspiring footballers and guided them during a friendly match. Cafu emphasized the importance of integrating sports with education, stating that football can play a vital role in shaping a better future for children.

The Indian football team is set to play a friendly match against Panama on September 25 at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium. This will mark the first encounter between the Blue Tigers and Panama. Following that, India will face Brazil on October 3 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata. The Indian team will also travel to New Zealand for two friendly matches on November 12 and 15.
