England Set to Face DR Congo in FIFA World Cup Round of 32 with Tactical Changes

New York, June 30: England will take on DR Congo in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Wednesday. Head coach Thomas Tuchel may implement some changes to his starting lineup.

The Group L winners secured their top position after a goalless draw against Ghana and a 2-0 victory over Panama. However, questions remain about their ability to break down strong defensive teams. England’s defense has shown some vulnerabilities that a formidable opponent could exploit.

Jude Bellingham showcased his talent in the match against Panama, scoring the opening goal from a corner and assisting Harry Kane for the second, ensuring England’s victory.

Tuchel is expected to welcome midfielder Declan Rice back to the squad, who missed the Panama match due to a minor calf issue. Rice is likely to return alongside Elliot Anderson in midfield, while Morgan Rogers may have to sit out.

Reece James, recovering from a hamstring injury, will not be available, and Jarrell Quansah’s participation is doubtful after sustaining an ankle injury on Saturday. Jade Spence is anticipated to start as right-back, with Nico O’Reilly on the left. Spence’s attacking runs could strengthen the team, while Tuchel must decide whether Bukayo Saka or Noni Madueke will play on the right wing. Saka appeared less than match-fit against Panama, while Madueke did not make a significant impact.

Marcus Rashford is expected to retain his position on the left flank, ahead of Anthony Gordon, as one of England’s standout players against Panama.

DR Congo has emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest surprises. The team defeated Uzbekistan, drew with Portugal, and narrowly lost 1-0 to Colombia, securing their place in the Round of 32.

Playing under the name “Jaire,” DR Congo became the first sub-Saharan African nation to participate in the FIFA World Cup in 1974. Although they lost all three matches in that campaign, including a 9-0 defeat to Yugoslavia, the current DR Congo squad is considered much stronger and more competitive.

With experienced players like Cedric Bakambu, Noah Sadiki, Yoane Wissa, Axel Tuanzebe, and former England U-21 defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, along with several players competing in France, DR Congo poses a significant challenge. England will not underestimate them as they aim for a place in the Round of 16.
