Budgam, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : A prominent commander of the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba was killed during an encounter with joint security forces in Budgam district, Jammu and Kashmir, on September 30. The Indian Army confirmed the operation took place late Tuesday evening.
According to a post by the Chinar Corps, based in Srinagar, the operation was launched based on specific intelligence. The Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) initiated a joint search operation in the Korag area of Yusmarg.
The post detailed that vigilant soldiers observed suspicious activity, and when challenged, the militants opened fire, leading to a fierce exchange. During this confrontation, one militant was neutralized.
The deceased militant has been identified as Mohammad Asif, also known as Fauji Musa, who was wanted for his involvement in several attacks in the region. Authorities noted that he had escaped from an earlier encounter in the Yusmarg hills on September 5, where a close associate, Yasir, was killed.
Officials stated that the operation was launched following credible intelligence regarding the presence of militants in the area. As the joint forces intensified their search and approached the suspected hideout, the militants began firing, resulting in the encounter that led to the Lashkar-e-Taiba commander’s death.
The operation in the area is still ongoing. Following reports of militant movement in the Pir Panjal mountain range, security forces and the Jammu and Kashmir Police have heightened vigilance across the Union Territory. This mountain range connects the hilly districts of the Jammu Division to the valley.
Operations against militants are currently underway in the densely forested regions of Poonch, Rajouri, Kishtwar, Doda, Ramban, and other districts. The primary objectives of these operations are to eliminate hidden militants and ensure they do not find refuge to plan targeted attacks against security forces and civilians.
The joint forces are closely monitoring hilly areas in districts such as Shopian, Kulgam, Anantnag, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Budgam to prevent militants from establishing bases in the Jammu Division under the pressure of ongoing operations.
