Kolkata, June 24: Police have summoned former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Atin Ghosh and his daughter Priyadarshini Ghosh for questioning following allegations of land grabbing.
According to police reports, Atin Ghosh, who previously served as the Deputy Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), and his daughter are expected to appear for questioning this week. Both are accused of committing fraud amounting to approximately ₹5 million.
A hotel owner filed a complaint stating that his property was forcibly taken over for a significantly low price. The incident reportedly occurred in the Pragati Maidan police jurisdiction but has since been transferred to the Bidhannagar North police station, where an investigation is underway.
However, Atin Ghosh claimed on Wednesday that he has not yet received any notice from the police.
Atin Ghosh won the Kashi Pur-Belghoria seat in the 2021 assembly elections. He contested the recent elections from the same seat but lost to BJP candidate Ritesh Tiwari.
Following the change of power in the state, police action against TMC leaders has intensified, with several cases leading to arrests on charges of extortion, corruption, and misconduct.
An FIR has been registered against Atin Ghosh and his daughter based on the hotel owner’s complaint. They face serious charges, including land grabbing, intimidation, fraud, and criminal conspiracy.
According to police, Atin Ghosh has allegedly occupied a three-story bungalow on two and a half katha of land adjacent to the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass for nearly nine years.
Sources indicate that the current market value of the land and property is around ₹40 million, while the complainant alleges he was paid only ₹5 million for it.
Priyadarshini Ghosh stated in a conversation with some media outlets, “No one has been able to tarnish my father’s 50-year political image. We do not accept these allegations. I will file a defamation lawsuit now.”
Meanwhile, the state’s Minister for Urban Affairs and Development, Agnimitra Paul, remarked, “Previously, there was neither a proper investigation nor legal proceedings. Now that a complaint has been filed, the case will be investigated.”
