Finalizing Coconut Promotion Scheme After Discussions with Farmers: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Chennai, March 7: Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan arrived in Chennai on Saturday. He stated that he came to meet farmers from coconut-producing states. Farmers, agricultural experts, scientists, officials, and the chairman of the Coconut Board gathered at IIT Chennai, representing Tamil Nadu and other coconut-producing regions.

He expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for launching the Coconut Promotion Scheme, which was announced by the Finance Minister during the budget session. Chouhan emphasized that the scheme would be finalized after discussions with farmers. The primary goals are to increase production, enhance productivity, and improve quality. These efforts aim to boost the income of coconut farmers, leading to the development of a comprehensive plan by the Coconut Promotion Board after consultations with the farmers.

Chouhan shared his affection for Tamil Nadu, stating, “Whenever I visit this sacred land, my heart fills with joy and happiness. I pay homage to the great people, culture, values, traditions, and illustrious personalities of Tamil Nadu. It is the heart of India.”

He highlighted that Tamil Nadu is a leading state in coconut production, especially among southern states. Approximately 125 million farmers cultivate coconuts, and around 30 million people depend on coconuts for their livelihoods. However, Tamil Nadu’s farmers face various challenges. Many coconut plantations are aging, with trees over 60 years old showing decreased production. Productivity has declined due to various diseases affecting the crops.

Chouhan stressed the need to address these diseases. He called for developing high-quality coconut varieties that are climate-resilient, disease-resistant, and capable of withstanding bacteria and viruses while ensuring higher productivity and better quality.
