Explosion at Telangana Pharma Unit Claims One Life, Injures Eight

Hyderabad, May 1: A tragic incident occurred on Friday at a pharmaceutical factory in the Nalgonda district of Telangana, where a reactor explosion resulted in the death of one employee and left eight others injured.

The explosion took place at a pharma unit located on the outskirts of Veliminedu village in the Chityal mandal. As work was underway at the facility, a blast ignited a fire in the third block of the unit. Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene with fire engines and other equipment to combat the blaze, which produced thick smoke throughout the area.

Nine workers were reported injured in the incident. They were promptly transported to the Kamineni Institute of Medical Sciences in Narketpally, where one of the injured succumbed to their injuries. The deceased has been identified as Boddhu Balakrishna, a 30-year-old resident of Chinnakaparthi in Nalgonda district. Among the injured, two are reported to be in critical condition.

This marks the second such incident at the pharmaceutical unit in less than a month. On April 9, a similar explosion had injured two workers.

In response to the incident, Director General of Police C.V. Anand emphasized the need for training fire service personnel to handle disasters in chemical factories. He also stated that police should coordinate effectively with other departments as first responders in such emergencies.

An emergency management unit has already been established within the fire department. The Hyderabad Disaster Management and Property Protection Agency (HYDRA) and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) are also actively working in the field of disaster management.

Last year, Telangana experienced one of its worst industrial accidents, where 54 workers lost their lives and 28 others were injured in a chemical factory in Sangareddy district. This incident occurred on June 30 at the Sigachi Industries manufacturing plant in the Pashamylaram industrial area, following a massive explosion that led to a devastating fire. The plant produces microcrystalline cellulose powder, used as a binding agent in tablets and capsules.
