
Tehri, April 29: District Magistrate Nitika Khandelwal has taken decisive action following recent accidents in the Chamba, Kunjapuri, and Devprayag areas. She convened a review meeting with relevant departments to discuss necessary safety measures.
Khandelwal directed that landslide mitigation work be carried out at all sensitive locations along the Chamba-Uttarkashi road. She emphasized the deployment of JCB machines and instructed that their details be shared with the concerned departments. Jagdish Khati, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department in Chamba, reported that 15 parapets have been installed on the Chamba-Nail road, with plans to add crash barriers soon.
ARTO Satendra Raj provided statistics on accidents, injuries, and fatalities on national highways, state roads, and other district routes. He also updated the meeting on the status of check posts and the ANPR system in the district. Raj stressed the importance of creating rumble strips on sloped roads and raising awareness among passengers about checking vehicle brakes, tires, clutches, and handbrakes. Information regarding enforcement actions taken by the transport department and related accident cases was also shared.
SSP Shweta Chaubey suggested designating the site of a recent accident on the Nail-Chamba road as a black spot for further study. She urged adherence to government orders advising against night travel during the Char Dham Yatra season, recommending that journeys start only after 4 AM.
The All Uttarakhand Motor Transport Association proposed installing speed signboards on sloped roads like Tachhla, conducting thorough accident investigations, checking vehicle fitness, and verifying driving licenses, particularly hill licenses. The District Magistrate instructed that a dumping zone be leveled for use as parking.
The meeting included ADM Shailendra Negi, ASP Deepak, all SDMs, ARTO Satendra Raj, BRO’s SS Rawat, and representatives from the All Uttarakhand Motor Transport Association, including President Gajendra Singh Negi, General Secretary Suresh Tiwari, Secretary Amar Singh Rawat, and Organization Minister Bijendra Singh Kadari.
