Empowering Girls in Doda: The ARSETI Initiative for Self-Reliance through Tailoring Training

Mumbai, May 8: The ARSETI (Rural Self Employment Training Institute) program is making a significant impact in Doda district, Jammu and Kashmir. Launched to empower rural youth for self-employment, this initiative is a joint effort by the Ministry of Rural Development and the State Bank of India (SBI). It focuses on providing various vocational skills, particularly to young girls.

In Doda, many girls have enrolled in cutting and tailoring courses, learning the intricacies of sewing and design. Participants express their desire to establish their own units after completing the course, aiming for economic self-reliance.

The primary goal of ARSETI institutions is to reduce rural unemployment and prepare youth to start small enterprises. The program offers free residential training ranging from six days to six weeks in sectors like agriculture, product manufacturing, processing, and general services.

Training courses include dairy farming, poultry, tailoring, beauty parlor management, mobile repairing, computer hardware, and various agricultural activities. Notably, beneficiaries receive free meals and accommodation during training, allowing economically weaker youth to participate without financial burden.

Insha Bano, a beneficiary, shared her experience with a news agency, stating that the program is highly beneficial for rural youth. She learned many important aspects of sewing and business during her ten-day training. Insha emphasized that not everyone can secure a job after education, making self-employment a viable option. She encourages other youth to take advantage of this initiative.

Another beneficiary, Abisha Sharif, highlighted that tailoring training provides girls with the opportunity to stand on their own feet. She believes that after training, they can start their own businesses and escape unemployment.

Abisha considers this initiative a blessing for girls who are often idle at home, as it equips them with skills and the chance to become financially independent.

Trainer Arpana Korwal explained that the comprehensive 31-day training program begins with an introduction to participants, followed by lessons on measuring, types of fabrics, and technical aspects of tailoring.

The aim of the training is not just to teach sewing but to empower women and girls to successfully run their businesses. Upon completion, participants receive certificates, facilitating easier access to bank loans for starting their self-employment ventures.

The ARSETI initiative is proving crucial in making women in rural areas self-reliant. It not only equips youth with employable skills but also paves the way for confidence and economic independence.
