Kolkata, March 5: The Election Commission of India has expressed dissatisfaction over the progress of election preparations in two districts of West Bengal. This information was communicated to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Bengal.
Sources indicate that last week, top officials from the Election Commission held a virtual meeting with district-level electoral officers, senior bureaucrats, and police officials from West Bengal at their headquarters in New Delhi. They sought updates on the status of election preparations across various districts in the state.
A source from the CEO’s office stated, “After reviewing the inputs received last week, the Commission identified several shortcomings in the election preparations. Although Wednesday was a holiday due to Holi, Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti conducted a brief virtual meeting with West Bengal’s electoral officials, including the District Magistrate. He expressed dissatisfaction regarding the progress of election preparations in South 24 Parganas and some areas of Bihar.”
It is reported that Bharti will hold another virtual meeting with electoral officials on Thursday, where he may instruct them on necessary steps to expedite the election preparation process.
The full bench of the Election Commission is scheduled to arrive in West Bengal on the night of March 8. Following this, on March 9 and 10, the Commission will conduct multiple marathon meetings to review the ongoing judicial inquiry into the ‘logical discrepancies’ in voter documents and the status of election preparations.
Meanwhile, leaders and activists of the CPI-M have staged a night-long protest in central Kolkata in front of the CEO’s office since Wednesday evening. They demand that no election dates be announced in the state until the judicial inquiry is completed and guarantees are provided that all legitimate voters’ names remain on the list.
The protest continued into Thursday morning. CPI-M leaders stated that the demonstration will persist until West Bengal’s Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agrawal meets with them.
The final voter list was published on February 28, which did not include names sent for judicial inquiry. Supplementary lists will be issued later based on the progress of the judicial process.
