Bhopal, February 28: On February 28, eight more cheetahs will arrive at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district from Botswana.
This relocation is part of India’s ‘Cheetah’ translocation project, aimed at strengthening the cheetah population in the region. This third batch includes six females and two males.
According to officials, the cheetahs will be transported to India via a special aircraft and then flown to Kuno by two Indian Air Force helicopters from Gwalior. The helicopters are scheduled to depart at 8:30 AM and will land in Kuno around 9:30 AM.
Five helipads have been prepared in the park for the operation. The entire process will adhere to scientific and veterinary protocols.
Upon arrival, the cheetahs will undergo mandatory immigration, customs, and veterinary checks before receiving security clearance. They will then be placed in specially designed enclosures for a quarantine period of about one month to acclimatize to their new environment and for health monitoring.
Kuno National Park has already seen an increase in its cheetah population. The project began in 2022.
Of the twelve cheetahs brought from South Africa last year, eight are thriving in Kuno, while three were relocated to Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary. Ten cubs born from the South African females are alive.
The first adult female, Mukhi, born in Kuno, has given birth to five cubs. Another female, Gamini, has had two litters. The first three cubs are healthy, and she recently gave birth to three more. One cheetah is roaming the open forest with her 13-month-old cub, while another named Nirva is raising her three 10-month-old cubs in a protected enclosure.
